What is a Wordmark Logo?

A "wordmark" is a type of logo that features the company's name styled in letters. The word "logo", when used to describe branding, refers to an image or icon associated with a brand, and this term does not apply here.

The advantage of having your business name stylized as a logo is obvious - it immediately associates your logo with your business name and does not leave much room for brand confusion. Creating the letters from scratch with subtle identifiers allows your logo to stand alone as a recognizable symbol, without any specific graphic elements that might be too generic or repetitive in nature.

 

Wordmark Logo Design Process

Great brands are born from meaningful relationships. I view the wordmark logo design practice as our collaborative effort that inspires creative thinking at each phase of the process.

STEP 1

Exploration Phase

When it comes to the wordmark logo design process, quantity leads to quality. The more logo design experimentation we do, the more informed the final logo design will be. In the Exploration Phase, traditional methods of drawing by hand allow us to design quickly and iterate even faster. I design a wide range of styles and letterforms of potential wordmark logo designs and then look to your team for feedback.

STEP 2

Vector and Refinement

The Development Phase is all about refining the concept that we landed on from the initial exploration. After cleaning up the sketch, we then vector the type digitize the logo. During the vector process, I further polish the letterforms and adjust spacing. It’s important to highlight the elements that make the mark unique while retaining legibility. It’s all about the details!

STEP 3

Application & Delivery

In this last phase, I present the final versions of the wordmark logo designs. I strive to create responsive wordmarks with inline, stacked, and monogram aviations that allow for easy implementation across a variety of touch points. All files are properly saved, sized and formatted and we also include all of the working design files. To take your brand to the next level, we highly suggest building out a full visual identity system and brand book that acts as your guide for how to properly express your brand.
